THE TOBACCO

First preventable cause of death in the world, smoking is a major health problem. In France, it is responsible for 73,000 deaths each year, including 44,000 due to cancer. The number of smokers in France is estimated at 15 million. Tobacco is implicated in 17 cancers. On an international scale, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 5.4 million deaths per year are attributable to smoking (15,000 daily deaths for the tobacco factor alone).
The association tobacco, lung cancer is no longer in doubt and has been widely demonstrated through numerous epidemiological studies.

CONTEXT

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in France and worldwide. The prognosis for these cancers is poor, with an average of 15% survival at 5 years. In 2012, the global burden of lung cancer amounted to 1.69 million cancer deaths during the year, or 4,630 deaths per day according to the WHO. Lung cancer is the 4th most common cancer in France. If it stagnates in men, it progresses strongly in women. Lung cancer is on the way to becoming the leading cause of female cancer death.

IN CORSICA

In Corsica, the situation with regard to tobacco is particularly worrying. The ARS of Corsica specifies that men and especially women have a mortality rate from lung cancer higher than the national average: + 12% for men and + 27% for women and that it is estimated at 164 number of lung cancer deaths each year in men and about 70 in women, i.e. 234 deaths compared to 199 between 2006 and 2008.
